Ode to 2008…

So now we’ve come to the end of ‘08
And I can honestly say it wasn’t that great
With war still raging on foreign fronts
And our congress jockeying with political stunts

But the American people they trotted on
Unaware that soon to come were other bombs
The houses they owned were soon too expensive
With interest rates & payments becoming increasingly intensive

The builders kept building but no one would buy
And soon the banks said the money went dry
So to the wayside they went one by one
Until it reached the point of virtually none

But still we moved on with most of us not knowing
That the real monster was still growing
We watched our money begin to shrink
And started to realize, hey something stinks

First it was the gas close to $5.00 we paid
Waiting in lines we hoped and prayed
Oh please don’t run out before I get my fill
Because I know I need it more than Country Club Jill
So at 3am we pumped when ever we could
Paying a crazy price but still feeling good

And for 2 weeks in July we put our worries aside
Watching from Beijing how sporting worlds collide
With Michael Phelps the records did fall
To our amazement 8 in all

And still moving on through the summer & fall
We turned our attention to a political call
The campaign for president was taking center stage
Filled with corruption, lies, passion & rage
The Libs made up stories the Republicans too
And we all wondered which were false & which were true
Obama was mesmerizing & Palin was cute
McCain & Biden dull… but who knew
So with Fox News playing 24/7
Our emotions ran the gamut from hell to heaven

And when in November when it was all done
It saddened me to think that the other team won
So now we can wait to see what the brother will do
And only hope that he can get it straight & pull us through

With bailouts, scams & CEO thieves
I think its time for everyone to roll up their sleeves
To put some common sense back into our lives
And realize that only we can help ourselves thrive
They blamed Bush and his policies for all of this mess
But the truth is it’s the congress that needs to confess

So to 2009 we all go
And a lot of us with little to show
Some looking for work others just trying to recoup
But listen up good because here is the scope
Stay focused on your target
Because this too shall pass
Even though at times it’s a real pain in the ass

So to keep marching on is what we all do
Because as Americans that is our only truth…
